remain standing; keep standing all the way
Used when someone stays standing for an extended period, often in a situation where sitting would be expected or possible. Commonly appears as 立ち通しだ or 立ち通しで.
満員電車で一時間も立ち通しだった。
I had to stand the whole hour on the crowded train.
コンサートは立ち通しで見た。
I watched the concert standing the whole time.
Compound of 立ち (continuative form of 立つ 'to stand') + 通し (from 通す 'to pass through, to do continuously'). The combination expresses doing something all the way through while standing.
