The game or contest in which two teams pull on opposite ends of a rope. Also used figuratively for a struggle or contest between two sides.

• 運うん動どう会かいで綱つな引ひきをした。

  We played tug of war at the sports day.

  A tug of war between the ruling and opposition parties continues over the budget.

forward puller (of a rickshaw)

Historical term for a person who pulled a rickshaw from the front, as opposed to the main puller between the shafts. Rare in modern usage.

• 昔むかしの人じん力りき車しゃには、綱つな引ひきと呼よばれる前まえ引びきがいた。

  In old rickshaws, there was a forward puller called a tsunahiki.
