Used when actively drawing out information from a person, often through skillful or persistent questioning. Implies the information was not readily volunteered.

• 記き者しゃは政せい治じ家かから真しん実じつを聞きき出だそうとした。

  The reporter tried to get the truth out of the politician.

• 彼かの女じょは巧たくみに彼かれの秘ひ密みつを聞きき出だした。

  She skillfully extracted his secret.

Rare and somewhat literary; means to start listening to something, such as a story or music. In modern Japanese, 聞き始める is more common.

• 彼かれはラジオのニュースを聞きき出だした。

  He began listening to the radio news.
