Used when an action or plan produces an unintended negative result, often the reverse of what was hoped.

• 彼かれの親しん切せつなアドバイスが裏うら目めに出でて、彼かの女じょを怒おこらせてしまった。

  His well-meaning advice backfired and ended up making her angry.

• 値ね下さげが裏うら目めに出でて、品ひん質しつが疑うたがわれて売うれなくなった。

  The price cut backfired; people questioned the quality and sales dropped.
