こそあれこそすれこそなれMay be X, but certainly not Y

This formal pattern emphatically allows one possibility, then rejects its opposite or replaces it with a stronger claim. It often means “X may occur, if anything—but certainly not Y.”

How the contrast works

The first part does not simply concede a fact. It sharply limits the reasonable possibilities: X might happen, or X is the most that can be said. The continuation then rules out Y with a negative expression or an unmistakably opposing claim.

The productive verb pattern

このせいげんたんやしこそすれらすことはない。

This system may increase the burden on staff, but it certainly will not reduce it.

Analyze

The two alternatives are deliberately opposed: increasing the burden versus reducing it.

The noun-like pattern

けんちがいこそあれほうこうおなじだ。

There may be differences of opinion, but the direction we are aiming for is the same.

Analyze

Make the reversal unmistakable

The second half commonly contains an explicit negative, an expression meaning “there is no question of,” or wording equivalent to “far from.” Without a clear reversal, this construction loses the corrective force that distinguishes it from ordinary emphasis.

しんりょくひょうされこそすれなんされるべきではない。

Sincere effort should be recognized, not criticized.

Analyze

The natural English translation can be compact, but the Japanese strongly contrasts the appropriate response with the rejected one.

More examples

このあんひろげこそすれかいしょうすることはない。

This measure may spread anxiety, but it will certainly not relieve it.

Analyze

けいけんこそあれさんかくちがいはない。

There may be differences in experience, but the eligibility requirements are the same.

Analyze

データをこうかいすれば、しきへのしんらいたかまりこそすれそこなわれることはない。

Publishing the data may increase trust in the organization, but it certainly will not undermine it.

Analyze

そのせんたくそんちょうこそすれなんするつもりはない。

I respect that choice; I have no intention of criticizing it.

Analyze

ねんげつとともにおくうすれこそすれかんぜんえることはない。

Memories may fade with the years, but they do not disappear completely.

Analyze

じょうきょうあっしこそすれぜんかいぜんするみはない。

The situation may worsen, but there is no prospect of it improving on its own.

Analyze

ひょうげんちがいこそあれりょうあんしゅおなじだ。

The wording may differ, but the intent of the two proposals is the same.
