そのうえOn top of that; what is more

そのうえ adds another fact that strengthens the same positive or negative assessment. It often corresponds to “on top of that,” “what is more,” or “moreover.”

Building a stronger case

The second fact should push the overall assessment in the same direction. If the first point is praise, the added point normally gives another reason for praise; if the first point is criticism, it normally makes the criticism stronger.

Positive and negative additions

Notice that the second sentence does more than list an unrelated detail: it strengthens the conclusion suggested by the first.

More than a flat “also”

そのうえ often suggests that the new fact increases the degree, value, seriousness, or persuasive force of what has already been said. English “on top of that” therefore often captures it better than a flat “also.”

Choosing a nearby additive expression

それに is lighter and more conversational, especially when adding another reason or detail. そのうえ more clearly presents the new fact as extra weight in an accumulating case. しかも more strongly foregrounds the added fact as noteworthy, striking, or especially significant. These are tendencies rather than rigid rules, so context and tone still matter.
