defer, turnover, transfer, convey
譲 centers on giving something to someone else: deferring, transferring, or handing over possession or responsibility.
譲 is the modern simplified form of 讓. The older form combines 言 (words) with 襄, which likely contributed the sound and the idea of yielding or giving way. The modern right side 㐮 is a simplified version of 襄.
Words (言) on the left and a simplified form of 襄 on the right suggest using speech to yield or hand something over. Picture someone saying 'I defer to you' while passing an object.
For ジョウ, imagine a gentle 'Joe' deferring to others in conversation: Joe -> ジョウ, and his words transfer the decision.
