Literally means to stir up or rake a fire to make it burn more strongly. Often used with 火 (fire) or 炭 (charcoal).

• 焚たき火びを掻かき起おこして、火ひの勢いきおいを強つよめた。

  I stirred up the bonfire and made it burn stronger.

• 七しち輪りんの炭すみをかき起おこす。

  I rake the charcoal in the shichirin grill.
