Used when people, things, terrain, atmosphere, circumstances, etc. surround something from around the outside. Grammatically transitive, often with the surrounded thing marked by を.

• 警けい官かんたちが現げん場ばを取とり巻まいた。

  The police surrounded the scene.

• 高たかい山やま々やまがその村むらを取とり巻まいている。

  High mountains surround the village.

Often used in the passive, describing someone being surrounded by flatterers, hangers-on, or people trying to gain favor. The image still comes from people clustering around someone.

• 大だい臣じんはおべっかを使つかう連れん中ちゅうに取とり巻まかれていた。

  The minister was surrounded by people who flattered him.

• 彼かれを取とり巻まく人ひとたちは、いつも彼かれの機き嫌げんを取とっていた。

  The people who clustered around him were always trying to keep him pleased.
