Broad physical sense: winding something around a core, coiling a rope, rolling up a scroll, or wrapping a scarf/turban around the head.

• 彼かれは腕うでに包ほう帯たいを巻まいた。

  He wound a bandage around his arm.

• 寒さむいのでマフラーを巻まいて出でかけた。

  It was cold, so I wrapped a scarf around my neck and went out.

Usually in passive form 巻かれる, describing being enveloped by fog, smoke, darkness, or an atmosphere.

• 山さん頂ちょうは霧きりに巻まかれていた。

  The summit was shrouded in fog.

Military or tactical use: moving around the side of an enemy or obstacle. Also used figuratively for bypassing something.
