Used for bound volumes of a multi-volume work, or for reels of film. Often appears with numbers as a counter: 一巻, 二巻.

• この漫まん画がは全ぜん12巻かんで完かん結けつします。

  This manga series is complete in 12 volumes.

• 映えい画がのフィルムは何なん巻かんもあります。

  There are many reels of film for the movie.

scroll; roll (of paper, etc.)

Refers to a rolled-up object, such as a hanging scroll or a roll of paper. Less common in modern everyday contexts than 巻物 (まきもの).

• 床とこの間まに掛かけ軸じくの巻まきが飾かざってある。

  A hanging scroll is displayed in the alcove.

• 包ほう装そう紙しの巻まきを買かってきた。

  I bought a roll of wrapping paper.
