後こう者しゃ

Refers to the second of two people, things, choices, or ideas just mentioned. It is the counterpart of 前者, "the former."

Less common than the contrastive meaning "the latter." In this use it means a person or people who come afterward, such as successors or later generations; modern Japanese often uses 後継者, 子孫, or 後世の人々 instead.

• 古ふるい文ぶん章しょうでは、後こう者しゃが「後あとに続つづく者もの」を指さすことがある。

  In older writing, 後者 can refer to those who come afterward.
