Traditional construction technique where a pillar is erected by sinking its base directly into the earth, without a foundation stone or concrete base. Often used in the term 掘っ立て小屋 (hottate-goya, a simple hut built this way).

• 掘ほっ立たて小屋ごやは、柱はしらを直ちょく接せつ地じ面めんに埋うめて建たてる。

  A hottate-goya is built by burying the pillars directly into the ground.
