について・かんして・をめぐって・かかわる・にまつわる

Choosing how to frame a subject or issue

Choose by asking what kind of connection you mean. For an ordinary or formal subject matter, use について or かんして. If the matter is instead the center of a dispute, has real consequences, or has stories and background gathered around it, choose the more specific expression that says so.

Start with the relationship

English words such as “about,” “concerning,” and “related to” cover several different relationships. Identify that relationship before choosing the Japanese form.

An ordinary topic

について

Someone asks, speaks, thinks, studies, or explains something about a topic in ordinary conversation or writing.

Formal subject matter

かんして or かんする

A report, inquiry, rule, notice, or careful public statement concerns the named subject.

Its formal tone can sound unnecessarily stiff in relaxed conversation.

Associated stories or background

にまつわる

Stories, legends, memories, beliefs, questions, or other background material gather around a historical, cultural, or public theme.

For a direct technical relationship, the formal subject-matter form is usually safer.

The same subject in conversation and formal communication

A new workplace system is being discussed informally and then addressed in an official report.

あたらしいきんせいについてどうりょうはなした。

I talked with a colleague about the new workplace system.

あたらしいきんせいかんしてじんほうこくしょこうひょうした。

Takeaway: について is the normal unmarked choice. かんして presents the same matter in a more official, careful, or document-like way; it does not make the connection itself stronger.

When the issue is more than a topic

The other three forms add a specific relationship. One places an issue among active sides, one states a real effect or involvement, and one connects a theme with surrounding stories or background.

みなとさいかいはつあんをめぐってぎょぎょうくみあいこうしょうつづけている。

The city and the fisheries cooperative are continuing negotiations over the port redevelopment proposal.

Analyze

The proposal is the center of activity involving two clearly named sides.

このてんけんじょうきゃくあんぜんかかわる

This inspection affects passenger safety.

Analyze

Safety is genuinely at stake; it is not merely the subject of a report.

このてんでは、ふるかいどうにまつわるでんせつしょうかいしている。

This exhibition presents legends associated with the old highway.

Analyze

The legend is part of the cultural material that has gathered around the highway.

When the phrase comes before a noun

The forms do not all change in the same way before a following noun. The ordinary topic form adds , as in についてのほん. The formal subject-matter form usually becomes かんする. The remaining forms already end in a form that can directly describe a following noun: をめぐるろん, かかわるもんだい, and にまつわるものがたり.
