Conjunction that acknowledges a preceding statement while introducing a contrasting or unexpected result. Common in both spoken and written Japanese.
雨が降っていた。それでも彼は出かけた。
It was raining. Even so, he went out.
難しいとわかっていた。それでも挑戦した。
I knew it was difficult. Nevertheless, I took on the challenge.
