A noun meaning the act or result of distinguishing between things or treating them as separate. In modern Japanese it is mostly formal or literary, often seen in expressions such as 分かちなく; 区別 is the more ordinary word for “distinction,” and 差別 is the usual modern word for unfair discrimination.
