vexing; upsetting; offensive; unexpected and regrettable; unthinkable
Often used as 心外だ or 心外な when something is outside what one expected, intended, or deserves, and therefore feels regrettable, unfair, insulting, or hard to accept. For neutral 'unexpected,' 意外 is usually safer.
そんなふうに誤解されるのは心外だ。
It is upsetting to be misunderstood that way.
嘘つき呼ばわりされて、彼女は心外そうな顔をした。
Being called a liar, she looked offended.
優勝候補の初戦敗退は、チームにとって心外な結果だった。
For the title favorites, losing in the first round was an unexpected and bitter result.
It's upsetting to be told something like that.
I felt hurt by his criticism.
I was shocked by my boss's offensive remark.
She stood up looking rather offended.
