sense object
Linguistic term for the semantic object of a verb, as opposed to the grammatical object. Used in discussions of syntax and semantics.
In 'He reads a book,' 'book' is the sense object.
In the passive voice, the sense object can become the subject.
Compound of 意味上 (semantic) + の (possessive particle) + 目的語 (object). A technical term in Japanese linguistics.
