Used when a bad experience teaches someone not to repeat the same mistake. Often in the form 懲りずに (without learning one's lesson) or 懲りた (learned one's lesson).
I learned my lesson from the last failure, so I'll be careful this time.
彼は懲りずにまた同じ間違いをした。
He didn't learn his lesson and made the same mistake again.

Expresses being so discouraged or disgusted by an experience that one wants to avoid it in the future. Often used with ～に懲りる.
一度の失敗に懲りて、もう挑戦しようとしない。

I'm completely fed up with the bad food at that restaurant.
Discouraged by a single failure, he stopped trying new things.
Undeterred by his previous failure, he keeps taking on the same challenge.
懲りる means to learn a lesson and be discouraged from repeating something, while 凝る means to become absorbed in or elaborate about something; the words look and sound similar but are unrelated in meaning.
