Used when a bad experience teaches someone not to repeat the same mistake. Often in the form 懲りずに (without learning one's lesson) or 懲りた (learned one's lesson).
前回の失敗で懲りたので、今回は慎重にやります。
I learned my lesson from the last failure, so I'll be careful this time.
彼は懲
He didn't learn his lesson and made the same mistake again.

Expresses being so discouraged or disgusted by an experience that one wants to avoid it in the future. Often used with ～に懲りる.
一度の失敗に懲りて、もう挑戦しようとしない。
Discouraged by one failure, he won't try again.
あの店のまずい料理にすっかり懲りた。
I'm completely fed up with the bad food at that restaurant.
