Used when something goes all the way through an object or space, such as a bullet through a wall, a tunnel through a mountain, or a hole becoming open from one side to the other. As 貫通する it can be transitive or intransitive depending on the construction.
弾丸が壁を貫通した。
The bullet went through the wall.

The new tunnel runs right through the mountain.
ついにトンネルが貫通した。
The tunnel finally broke through.

Archaic or literary use meaning to be thoroughly versed in a field of learning. Modern Japanese normally uses expressions such as 精通している or 通じている instead.
古い文章では、「和漢の学に貫通する」のように使われることがある。
In older writing, it may be used in expressions such as “to be thoroughly versed in Japanese and Chinese learning.”
