追つい及きゅう

pressing someone on a matter; pursuing responsibility; questioning closely

Used when someone is pressed hard about responsibility, guilt, contradictions, or wrongdoing. Often takes objects such as 責任, 疑惑, 矛盾, and 罪.

• 野や党とうは大だい臣じんの責せき任にんを厳きびしく追つい及きゅうした。

  The opposition harshly pressed the minister on his responsibility.

• 記き者しゃは説せつ明めいの矛む盾じゅんを追つい及きゅうした。

  The reporter pressed him on the contradictions in his explanation.

A much less common literal use meaning to pursue and catch up with someone or something. In ordinary modern Japanese, 追いつく or 追い越す is usually clearer.

• 「先せん発ぱつ隊たいを追つい及きゅうする」という表ひょう現げんでは、追おいかけて追おいつくという意い味みになる。

  In the expression “追及する the advance party,” it means to chase after and catch up with them.
