godan verb (-ku), intransitive verb

Limited use for a loss, mistake, or damage being made good; it is especially natural in negative expressions such as 追いつかない, meaning that compensation or regret is no longer enough.

追い越す means to pass and go beyond someone, whereas 追い付く means only to catch up to the same point, not to go past it.
