beat, attack, defeat, conquer
撃 centers on striking with force to overcome: beating, attacking, defeating, or conquering an opponent.
撃 is the modern simplified form of 擊. The older form combines 毄 (a phonetic component suggesting striking) with 手 (hand), indicating hitting or attacking with the hand. The modern top component 軗 is a simplification.
The top part 軗 looks like a vehicle (車) with a weapon (殳), and the bottom is a hand (手). Imagine a hand striking from a chariot to beat and conquer the enemy.
For ゲキ, picture a dramatic attack scene in a gekiga (劇画) style comic: the hero strikes with a powerful blow. Geki -> ゲキ.
