区間
Meanings
Refers to a defined stretch of a route, track, line, or similar linear entity. Common in transportation contexts (railway, highway, etc.). Also used as a suffix to specify a particular segment.
Trains are often delayed on this section.
The Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka is convenient.
Mathematical use: a set of numbers between two endpoints. Not used for time intervals in everyday language; for that, 間隔 or 時間 is more common.
In mathematics, the interval [0, 1] is called a closed interval.
Usage patterns
- 〈場所〉から〈場所〉までの区間the section from place X to place Y
You can travel the section from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka by bullet train.
- 区間を走るto run/travel through a section (of a route)
This train runs nonstop through this section.
- 区間が運休するfor service on a section to be suspended
Due to heavy rain, service on this section is suspended.
- 区間限定limited to a certain section (of a route or campaign)
This campaign is offered only for a limited section.
- 区間で工事中under construction on a section
This section is currently under construction.
