Used for mathematical division or dividing an amount among people or units. The divisor or basis of division is often marked with で.
十を二で割ると五になる。
Ten divided by two is five.

Used when physically separating something into parts, especially by splitting or breaking it along a line. For simple cutting with a blade, 切る is often the more general verb.

Used with a benchmark or price marked by を, as in 目標額を割る or 定価を割る. With prices, it can mean selling below the normal or list price, effectively discounting.
売上が目標額を割った。
Sales fell below the target amount.
その店は在庫品を定価を割って売っていた。
That store was selling stock items below list price.
