厚あつい

Used for warm-hearted treatment, kindness, or generosity of feeling, as in 情に厚い or 厚くもてなす. 厚い is common; 篤い may also be used for sincere warmth.

• 彼かの女じょは情じょうに厚あつい人ひとだ。

  She is a warm-hearted person.

• 村むらの人ひとたちは旅たび人びとを厚あつくもてなした。

  The villagers welcomed the traveler warmly.

Covers deep trust, strong support, or sincere devotion. 厚い is common with trust or support, while 篤い is especially natural with faith or devotion.

• 彼かれは同どう僚りょうからの信しん頼らいが厚あつい。

  He is deeply trusted by his colleagues.

• 祖そ母ぼは信しん仰こうが篤あつい。

  My grandmother is devout in her faith.

Formal or literary use for a serious illness, normally written 篤い and often seen in the phrase 病が篤い. In ordinary modern speech, 重い or 重篤な is more common.

  Hearing that the illness was grave, the relatives gathered.
