Literal waking from sleep; intransitive. The transitive counterpart is 覚ます (さます).
朝、目が覚めると外は雪だった。
When I woke up in the morning, it was snowing outside.
大きな音で夜中に覚
I woke up in the middle of the night because of a loud noise.

Used when the effects of alcohol, anesthesia, or a daze fade and one returns to a normal state. Often written 醒める.
酔いが覚めるまで運転してはいけない。
You must not drive until you sober up.
麻酔が覚めて、患者はゆっくり目を開けた。
The anesthesia wore off and the patient slowly opened their eyes.

Figurative awakening from a mistaken belief, illusion, or infatuation. Often used with 夢 (dream) or in the phrase 迷いから覚める.
彼の言葉で、私は夢から覚めた。
His words brought me back to reality.
若い頃の幻想から覚めるのに時間がかかった。
It took time to be disillusioned with the fantasies of my youth.
