Figurative awakening from a mistaken belief, illusion, or infatuation. Often used with 夢 (dream) or in the phrase 迷いから覚める.
彼の言葉で、私は夢から覚めた。
His words brought me back to reality.

It took time to be disillusioned with the fantasies of my youth.
He finally came to his senses and shook off his confusion.
After the surgery, the anesthesia wore off quickly.
醒める means to sober up or wake from intoxication, the opposite process of 酔っ払う, which means to become drunk.
覚める means to wake up from sleep or a dream, while 冷める means to cool down or lose warmth/enthusiasm—same reading, different kanji and meaning.
