Used when people, animals, or things draw together at one place or around something.

• 祭まつりの屋や台たいに人ひとが大おお勢ぜい寄よっていた。

  A lot of people had gathered at the festival stalls.

Used for making a short stop on the way somewhere else. Common with 帰りに, 途中で, コンビニに, and similar expressions.

• 帰かえりにコンビニに寄よった。

  I stopped by a convenience store on the way home.

advance in age; be on the high side

The fixed expression 年が寄る for growing old, and numerical uses where values tend toward the higher side are also used. 年が寄る is less common than 年を取る in everyday speech.

  As you grow old, you can no longer push yourself as hard.

• 今こん回かいの測そく定てい値ちは少すこし高たかめに寄よっている。

  This set of measurements is a little on the high side.

Almost always used in the form しわが寄る, meaning wrinkles or creases form on skin, cloth, paper, and similar surfaces.

• 笑わらうと目め元もとにしわが寄よる。

  Wrinkles form around the eyes when one smiles.

Only when written 倚る / 凭る

A limited use meaning to rest one's body against something. Modern everyday Japanese more often uses もたれる or 寄りかかる; 倚る and 凭る are attested but search-only spellings.

• 「柱はしらに倚よる」は、柱はしらにもたれるという意い味みで使つかわれる表ひょう現げんだ。

  The expression 柱に倚る means to lean against a pillar.

Sumo term for advancing and driving the opponent back while holding the mawashi belt, as in the movement leading to 寄り切り.

• 力りき士しはまわしを取とると、土ど俵ひょう際ぎわまで一いっ気きに寄よった。

  After grabbing the belt, the wrestler drove his opponent straight to the edge of the ring.

settle on a price; come to a deal

Commercial or bargaining use, especially in the expression 値が寄る, for a price being agreed on and a deal coming together.

• 商しょう取とり引ひきの言いい方かたで、「値ねが寄よる」は値ね段だんが決きまって取とり引ひきがまとまることをいう。

  In commercial terminology, 値が寄る means that a price is settled and the transaction is concluded.

Archaic use for being influenced by or yielding to a person. Not a normal modern substitute for 従う or 影響される.

• 古こ語ごでは「人ひとに寄よる」が、人ひとに心こころを動うごかされる・従したがう意い味みで使つかわれた。

  In classical usage, 人に寄る meant to be moved by or yield to someone.
