Used when things such as lines, gazes, or parts come together or meet. For intentionally meeting a person, 会う is the usual spelling and different word.

• 二に本ほんの線せんが一いっ点てんで合あう。

  The two lines meet at one point.

• ふと二人ふたりの視し線せんが合あった。

  For a moment, their eyes met.

Used when size, taste, style, color, or conditions are suitable for someone or something. Often appears as に合う or よく合う.

• この靴くつは私わたしの足あしに合あう。

  These shoes fit my feet.

• このワインは魚さかな料りょう理りによく合あう。

  This wine goes well with fish dishes.

Used when information, calculations, opinions, answers, or timing correspond correctly or are in agreement.

• 彼かれとは意い見けんがよく合あう。

  My opinions often agree with his.

Common in expressions such as 割に合う and 採算が合う, referring to whether effort, cost, or reward balances out.

• こんな安やすい報ほう酬しゅうでは割わりに合あわない。

  Pay this low is not worth the effort.

  At this price, it will be profitable.
